We’ve parked in a lot of places this summer, and most of them only once. The bandshell is the one we keep coming back to. It took us a while to figure out why, because on paper it’s not the busiest spot around.
Shade
A metal box truck in the Idaho sun gets hot fast. By late morning in full sun, the cookies get soft, the paperback covers start to curl, and whoever’s working the window is sweating through their shirt. The bandshell has a row of big old trees that keep everything cool. Honestly, that’s most of the reason right there.
A flat spot
Our truck is never quite level, but at the bandshell she gets pretty close. That matters more than you’d think. On a tilt, the books slide to one end of the shelf and the cash box slowly makes a break for it.
People who sit
Busy sidewalks have way more people walking by, but walkers usually grab one cookie and keep moving. People hanging out on a blanket grab a bag of cookies, then come back for a book, then send a friend over. It’s much more fun for everybody.
