Our truck is a 1979 box truck, and she has a lot of personality. Some of that personality is charming. Some of it involves a very long drive up a very small hill.
When we first got her, we tried to fix everything. We quickly learned that a truck this old doesn’t really get “fixed.” You just get to know her.
She’s slow up hills
Like, really slow. We’ve been passed by a guy on a bike. Twice. Now we just leave earlier than we think we need to and enjoy the view on the way.
She’s never quite level
We’ve gotten very good at finding flat parking spots. It matters more than you’d think! On a tilt, a stack of paperbacks will slowly slide to one end of the shelf like they’re trying to escape.
The back door has opinions
Some days it opens on the first try. Some days it needs a firm talking-to and a good shove. We’ve learned not to take it personally.
Taped to the dashboard
leave 10 min early. she's slow up hills. she will not be rushed.
Could we get a newer truck? Sure. But then who would we complain about? Come say hi to her at the next stop. She’s the one with the cookies and books in the window.
