We picked up a box of forty paperbacks last week, and thirty-nine of them were westerns. Somebody out there had a serious collection going. The spines were all cracked in that good way that means they got read, not just stacked on a shelf.
We like to flip through the first page of everything before it goes on the truck. Flipping through thirty-nine westerns in a row, we learned something: they mostly start the same way. A man rides into a dusty town. He has a horse, or he really wants one.
Then we got to the fortieth book. It was a mystery from 1962 with an old library stamp from a little town in Nebraska, and somebody had pressed a flower in chapter nine. It’s still in there! We both read it before it went out, and we both loved it.
On the book shelf
westerns from $2! the mystery is in there somewhere too. good luck finding it.
The westerns are on the truck now, starting at $2. They’re good ones! Somebody loved them enough to keep forty of them, and then decided to pass them along. We think that’s pretty great. Come find the truck and grab one (or five).
